Formally known as the Institute for Colored Youth the current Cheney State University was established in 1837 making it The Oldest HBCU in existence. 1867 was the year Octavius Catto, an instructor at the Institute, organized an amateur baseball team made up of current and former students.

Additionally nine HBCUs were founded in 1867 including Barber-Scotia College, Fayetteville State University, Johnson C. Smith University, Morehouse College, St. Augustine’s University, Talladega College, Alabama State University, Morgan State University and Howard University.
